The TableMinis Bakes, Bites & Breakfast Book Club: Babel

📚 What is the cost of an empire, and what power is locked away in the space between languages?

As September brings a crisp, academic energy to the air, we are stepping into the imposing stone halls of Oxford’s Royal Institute of Translation—better known as Babel. This month, we are diving into R.F. Kuang’s breathtaking, dark academia masterpiece: Babel, or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution.

Journey to an alternate 1830s Victorian London where silver-working is the beating heart of the British Empire, powered entirely by the loss that happens when words are translated.

Orphaned in Canton and brought to England by a mysterious guardian, Robin Swift is trained for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all to prepare him for admission into the world’s premier center of translation magic. But as Robin settles into his cohort and learns the dazzling mechanics of silver bars that make the empire's global machinery run, a darker reality sets in. Babel serves an empire built on exploitation, and Robin is forced to choose between the safety of his ivory tower and the revolutionary justice of the Hermes Society.

It’s a searing, intellectually rich exploration of imperialism, systemic oppression, and the heavy, dangerous weight of every word we speak.

As per usual, there’ll be good company, good conversation, and some very good food!!
