About the Event

GM Fundamentals: Designing & Managing Themes in Your Games

The best campaigns aren't just remembered for their fights or their plot twists. They're remembered for how they made players feel, and that feeling almost always comes down to theme.

Theme is the thread that runs beneath everything: the moral questions your story keeps returning to, the tension that gives your world weight, the reason players care about what happens next. But for many GMs, theme is something that happens by accident rather than by design.

GM Fundamentals: Designing & Managing Themes in Your Games is a practical workshop that helps GMs identify, build, and sustain meaningful themes across their sessions and campaigns. Whether you're running a one-shot or a long-form campaign, understanding how to work with theme makes your storytelling more intentional, more resonant, and far more memorable.

We'll cover how to find the themes already present in your story and sharpen them with purpose, how to weave themes into encounters, NPCs, and player choices without being heavy-handed, and how to keep your themes consistent across multiple sessions without losing spontaneity.

We'll also explore how to create space for players to engage with themes on their own terms, and what to do when the story pulls in a different direction than you planned.

By the end of the workshop, you'll have practical tools to bring more meaning and coherence to your games, whether you're building something new or deepening something already in progress.
