Advanced Game Mastering: Incorporating Subtext in TTRPGs

Incorporating Subtext in TTRPGs is a hands-on workshop for players and GMs who want richer roleplay, the kind that lands at the table, not just in your head after the session. We all love nuance. We all love layered characters. But TTRPG is a live, collaborative medium: there’s no editor, no second draft and no guarantee everyone “caught the moment” the same way.

Subtext is powerful, but in TTRPG, it works differently than it does in novels, films, or scripted scenes. We can revise or control outcomes after the fact. Scenes unfold live, collaboratively and under pressure.

And when players try to import writing techniques that rely on hidden meaning, perfect timing, or hindsight clarity, they often end up competing with the medium itself. This could mean - missed cues, confused players and moments that only make sense after the scene is already over.

This workshop is built around a simple but crucial idea: effective TTRPG subtext must be playable and readable in the moment.

Instead of relying on subtlety that only exists in your head, strong tabletop subtext shows up through clear wants, observable behaviour, and meaningful choices made under pressure.

When subtext is expressed this way, it becomes something the entire table can engage with immediately, not something recognised too late or misunderstood entirely. In this workshop, we’ll turn that into actionable tools: how to express unspoken tension clearly, how to signal intent without monologuing and how to create scenes where other players can actually respond, immediately, confidently and with fun.
